A Round up of My Skincare Routine

A Round up of My Skincare Routine

My skincare routine didn’t start because I had time or love to take care of my skin. I remember when I went so bare about my acne story both on the blog and on my Instagram. My skincare journey has totally been a mess from time immemorial and this has always affected my self esteem. Imagine having friends and acquaintances with the most amazing skin and you look at yourself in the mirror and all you see is acne, blackheads, and terrible hyperpigmentation.

As if that is not even enough, you are faced with eczema, you would wish you rip off your skin and replace with a very smooth velvety skin of your choice.

When life gives you lemon, make lemonade goes the cliche saying and this was what I did. I made a beautiful lemonade out of the mess of a skin life gave me. It wasn’t a very rosy skincare journey to be honest. And I have had days where I had to ask myself if it was actually worth all these money going to one skincare brand. You need to see my face when I pay the bill for my skincare regimen. I promise you, it’s not the best but was it worth it? We would find out before this post is over.

My Skincare Routine After Dealing with Acne for Many Years

1. Finding Products that Works for Me

Dear sister in acne, please know that not all products work for you. Just because your friend used it and her skin looks like whipped cream you want to lick off chocolate from her body doesn’t mean it will work for you.

First, you have to understand that some people are so blessed with great genes that absolutely everything will work for them. Also, you’d need to know that not all ingredients in a beauty products is suitable for your skin.

I was recently in an online class organized by Sike and Patsy and I learnt so much my mind was blown away as regards understanding what beauty product to use and what a skincare routine should be like. You should definitely register for their next class when it is announced.

2. Cleanser And Soap

Before I apply any moisturizer on my face, I first cleanse with a Rosewater and Glycolic Acid from Body Organics. It’s so ironic how I used to believe face wipes does wonder when it comes to removing make up and cleansing the face. But I have come to realize it actually doesn’t remove all the dirt from the face.

Because after using face wipes, most of us just go off to bed assuming the make up or dirt has been thoroughly cleansed. That’s a beauty myth and you need a good cleanser to completely get rid off this dirt. Or rather, use a oil cleanser and then wash off your face with warm water.

Also for my regular bathe soap, I use this amazing French Butter Face and Body Soap from Body Organics. I actually like the fact that it works for both my face and body without making me have separate soaps for these purpose.

3. Moisturizers

This cannot even be over emphasized enough. Before now, whatever body moisturizer I use is what I also use for my face and I actually care less what the products does for me. Overtime, I came to the knowledge that most body moisturizers are terrible for the face.

So for my night time skincare routine, I use Body Organics French Butter Hydrating Face Serum. And the active ingredients contained in this product include: Bearberry Extract, Licorice and Beishi.

For my mornings, I use a nourishing face cream from VSP Botanics. I had to get this image from their Instagram page as I shared a cup with my sister and had to put the content in another cup. I totally love how light it is on my face and the fact that it does not bleach my skin.

For my body, I use Beyond Skin Body Serum with an hydrating Brightening oil during the day and night. This helps my skin stay moisturized all day and avoid dry or flaky skin.

4. Exfoliating

I actually see exfoliating as a luxury thing to do back then or a white man’s way of taking care of her skin. I would pass by various scrubs on the shelf and just pick a body cream and move on. Until I read somewhere about how important it is to scrub at least twice a week to allow other skin products work and also get rid of dead skin.

Skincare Scrub

At first, I got some off the shelf scrub from a drugstore like St. Ives scrub. It wasn’t doing so much and I was hardly seeing any visible difference.

As a result, I decided to try out Body Organics Scrub. And this has done so much greatness to my skin so far. After a while, I had to work with a Made in Nigeria brand, BerrybanksBeauty, and I was gifted one of their scrubs.

These two scrubs have been one of my best skincare possessions and I’ve come to love my skin ever since. I love how very refreshed my skin feels after using any of these two products.

My Feedback

There is this joy in my heart when I hear people tell me about how beautiful my skin is. In my head, I first do a mental calculation of how much goes into it and then I’m glad it all paying off and not just wasting, lols. And of course, I praise myself for having a skincare routine that I diligently stick to.

On a serious note, aside have a great skincare routine, the kind of product goes a long way in deciding the outcome. And it’s not just about having this product, it’s a matter of how well you use them.

It shouldn’t be a one off use of twice a week use. It has to be judiciously used before you can see a visible result. I have been using Body Organics products non stop for over a year now and I can say firsthand that it works for me. And it didn’t start working immediately I started using it, but with continuous overtime use.

I intend to try out other beauty products as time goes on. Most especially made in Nigeria brands whose products actively work without bleaching or damaging the skin. I still need to get a sunscreen to protect my face from too much exposure to the sun risking having sunburn.

Lastly, you have to ensure you are eating right and not consuming foods that are harmful to your health. You should also consider a good form of exercise as this is healthy for nourishing your skin cells and keeping them vital.

A Few Do Nots
  • Avoid using sponge on your face while bathing
  • Try not to use a raw black soap on your face. The watery based one is far better. I once tried the Brightening Black Soap With Glutathione & Grapeseed Extract from Body Organics and it was super amazing but sadly it wasn’t in stock when I wanted to get another.
  • Please do not leave any product on your face for too long, most especially soap based products. This will remove all the acid level on your face and leave it dry. It’s okay to wash off soap within 60 seconds after applying on your face.
  • Remember to always use a separate towel for your face.
  • Never pop your zits.

Your skin is so clear. If only products from Body Organics made this amazing change to your skin, then they are worth giving a try. Please can you confirm if they have an in-house consultant that prescribes the product that will treat your skin issue or do you have to research and choose the products yourself?

I am tired of off the shelf drug store products that don’t give clear results

Hi dear, I agree with that issues with drug store products. The first time I went there with my acne filled face, the lady I met was kind enough to explain each of the products to me and which is highly recommended.

I think they’ve trained their staff to be able to provide that service. I didn’t meet any in-house consultant when I was there.

      Thanks for reading.

This article is very good. I just learned quite a lot. It’s not just about acne. I never really gave thought to this but now I will. Thanks.
